A Swiss pass: worth buying?

The answer depends on how much you will ride. Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or single tickets?

Moving between cities on consecutive days, take the Swiss Travel Pass. Based in Interlaken or Grindelwald for the mountains, take the Jungfrau Travel Pass. Travelling only now and then, take the Half Fare Card.

  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses and boats on 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days, so a rest day in the middle is a day lost.[1]
  • It includes the Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos, and gives up to 50% off many other mountain excursions.[1]
  • Panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express still need a seat reservation or supplement.[1]
  • Residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein cannot buy the Swiss Travel Pass.[1]
  • The Half Fare Card gives half price on trains, buses, boats and most mountain railways, and is valid for one month.[2]
  • With a parent holding a pass or a Half Fare Card, children aged 6 to 15 travel free on the Swiss Family Card.[2]
  • The Jungfrau Travel Pass gives unlimited mountain railways, cable cars, trains and boats in the Jungfrau Region.[3]
  • It does not reach the Jungfraujoch summit, which needs a separate connecting ticket at a reduced price. If the summit is the point, count that cost too.[3]
  • For lakes and small villages with luggage, a hire car can suit better than the train.
